Career opportunities
A foreign affairs analyst (FAAs/IRAs) or international relation analyst is an expert in one or more areas of international relations, such as foreign policy, international trade, international and domestic security, and regional studies.
As a foreign affairs analyst you will
• perform research on issues related to the area of your expertise that may impact policies and positions of governments, humanitarian organizations and multinational corporations. Your work also includes assisting in the development of plans and policy formations and analysing the function of agencies and organizations and their impact on international relations.
• help non-governmental organizations, government agencies and private sector corporations alike formulate or revise their policies based on what is going on in strategically important parts of the world. Foreign affairs analysts also study the influence and effect of an organization or an agency in a specific country or region in the world. This means IRAs must be knowledgeable of the history, culture and political system of the country or region of the world they study and must be up-to-date on current events. A nation’s political and business ties are also of key strategic importance when conducting analyses.
• have a deep understanding of how countries relate to each other politically, economically, in social or cultural terms and diplomatically. As such, you are responsible for managing the political and commercial interests of an organization.
